Design

The design, as we mentioned, borrows cues from Toyota's bZ4X model. This means both models are similar in size. However, the Solterra's body has a more modern SUV body rather than Subaru's typical wagon-like frame. The cabin, too, is quite modern, with a high-mounted digital gauge and an elevated center console.

Additionally, Subaru has given the Solterra large side glass windows and a panoramic sunroof for a more open cabin feel. Plus, there's a spacious cargo area that can be expanded to 30 cubic feet of space with the seats folded.

Trims

The Subaru Solterra is available in three trim levels:

  • Premium
  • Limited
  • Touring

Performance

Powering the new Solterra is a single powertrain with a 72.8-kWh battery pack and two electric motors. With this setup, the Solterra offers all-wheel drive, 215 horsepower, and 249 lb.-ft of torque. The model also features four drive modes: Eco, Normal, Power, and X-mode. These drive modes help the Solterra when conditions on the roads are slippery or when the terrain is uneven.

Charging & Range

When tested, the EPA found that the new Solterra offers about 228 miles of range with a full charge. However, this is only achieved when the model rides on its 18-inch wheels. With the 20-inch tires attached, the range dips to 222 miles.

The new Solterra is also said to reach a full charge in about nine hours. Though that's when plugged into a Level 2 charging station. When hooked to a 100-kW DC fast charger, the vehicle can reach an 80-percent charge in about 56 minutes.

Technology

As a new SUV, Subaru has loaded the Solterra with a plethora of technologies. For example, the center dash houses a 12.3-inch touchscreen featuring Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a wireless phone charger. There are also optional features like built-in navigation and a stereo by Harman/Kardon. Additionally, every Solterra model also comes with a smartphone app. With the app, drivers can remotely lock and unlock the doors. The app also allows control the HVAC system to set the cabin to an ideal temp before getting inside.

Safety

Whether you're out on the trail or hitting the highway, the new Subaru Solterra will keep you safe. Basic features include automatic high beams, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning with automated emergency braking. There's also a 360-degree camera system that's available, which is a first for any Subaru model.
